HIS CADET STORY:

Richard “Scotty” McGarry was born in Scotland in 1945.  When his family moved to Garfield, NJ in 1957, he attended school at Most Holy Name, where he quickly became known as “Scotty”.  In the Fall of 1957, he joined the Holy Name Cadets, and has been involved with the Corps in one way or another since then.  His brothers Pat and Owen are also Holy Name and Garfield Cadet alumni.  Scotty marched with the Corps through 1966, the year when he met his wife Doreen (an alumnus with the Fair Lawn Police Cadets).  They were married in 1967 at Most Holy Name Church and remained married for over 54 years.

Through the 1980’s and 90’s Scotty worked on pursuing his college education and has degrees in Religious Studies with a Ph.D. from Fordham University.  In addition, he was ordained a Permanent Deacon in the Catholic Church and served for 11 years at Holy Name Church.  In fact, for all of the Cadet masses that we’ve had at Most Holy Name Church since our 75th celebration, Scotty has presided as a Deacon during the mass.

Since 2000, Scotty has remained active with the Cadets, first as a volunteer on the food truck, and then as a driver.  It was during these years that he began gathering material, taking photos, helping to develop a pictorial history of the Cadets.  In addition, Scotty served on the Board of Directors at various times from 1989 or so forward and participated in countless fund-raising projects.  He was blessed with the opportunity of seeing the Corps perform throughout the country and sharing his Cadet experiences through the eyes of a camera.

During the 1990’s he continued to expand the Corps history that included more memorabilia, videos, corps jackets, uniforms and the original documents of the 1934 Holy Name Cadets.  The Corps history is presented to the Corps, alumni, friends, and family at the Spring camps each year.
