HER CADET STORY:
Cheryl Philhower-Gillick grew up in Garfield, New Jersey and has been involved in Performing Arts Activities for most of her life. She started dancing and twirling baton competitively at a very early age. Her dance studies continued for more than 20 years but her baton career ended when she was introduced to her first rifle.
Cheryl joined the Plebes, the former feeder program for the Cadets where she played baritone horn in parades and also performed in the winter guard. Her goal was to march in the “Big Corps” and that dream came true in November of 1977 at the Paterson Armory where she was offered a spot in the color guard of the Garfield Cadets. Her marching career spanned from 1978-1985 with her age-out ending with the “three-peat”. Cheryl also performed with the New Your Royal Guardsmen winter guard and the Hawthorne Caballeros.
Throughout her career she has been a clinician for Winter Guard International and various other organizations. She has held the position of designer, technician, caption head, and director for numerous marching bands and winter guards in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. In the drum corps world, she has been involved with the Raiders, Jersey Surf, and Bridgemen Alumni Corps to name a few. Her judging affiliations include USBANDS, East Coast Judges Guild, Cavalcade of Bands, NJNJ, and KIDA.
Cheryl has volunteered for the corps in many areas where needed since aging out. She has organized fundraisers to help the organization in addition to helping current Cadets with fees and supplies that they may need.
