HIS CADET STORY:

Bob marched with the Corps in 1967, taught the Cadet Plebes from 1970 through 1977 (in a volunteer position) and then taught The Cadets in 1975 through 1977.

In 1977, the Garfield Cadets endeavored in a trendsetting program which included having the Color Guard play bugles at the conclusion of the exit (“I Don’t Know How to Love Him”).  Frank Dorritie, the Cadet Brass Arranger and Caption Head, asked Bob and Dennis Dewey to help teach the color guard how to play the horn, specifically to the music of “I Don’t Know How to Love Him”.  Bob started these instructions in the winter of 1976/77 and together they taught twenty-four (24) girls from the guard, who had never played a horn prior to this instruction, how to play with confidence and precision.  The effects of this move, the addition of 24 soprano players to the 56-member horn line, resulted in one of the most memorable visual and musical effects in the drum corps activity – an 80-person horn line . . .

Because of his experience with the Cadets, Bob went on to become a highly acclaimed judge in the DCI and DCA arenas, and a Chief Judging Coordinator for DCA.  He judged from 1969 through 2010.
