THEIR CADET STORY:

The Nikischer’s got involved with The Cadets in 1969 when a family friend asked their son Joe to go to a Plebe rehearsal because they were looking for new members (their son Jon was also a member of the Plebe organization).  Within a month, Aunt Nell had said she needed some help with the quartermistress responsibilities of the Plebes and so Mrs. Nikischer joined as quartermistress with Mr. Nikischer joining shortly thereafter.

 

Vacation schedules were based on going to championships with The Cadets, and all the Nikischer’s did was to volunteer their time to do whatever was needed.

 

When the girls were allowed to join the Plebes in 1970, Mr. Nikischer made the first set of flags and when the guard came out for the first season in winter guard, Mr. and Mrs. Nikischer went to every guard show.  Mrs. Nikischer helped get the girls ready, and Mr. Nikischer made sure that all the equipment was ready.  Mr. Nikischer was also the Plebe bus driver.

 

After the 1972 season was over, the Nikischer’s accelerated their activity with the Corps, joining the fundraising core group to help the organization.  Mr. Nikischer took over the manager position of the Plebe Corps and stayed in that position until 1974, with Mrs. Nikischer as head quartermistress for the Plebes, even though their son Joe had to leave the Corps to pursue his first love – color guard.  (At that time, the Corps had transitioned to an all-girl guard.)

 

Mr. Nikischer became the President of the Cadet Booster Association in 1974 and Mrs. Nikischer the Secretary.  Though Joe left the Plebes to join the Polish Falcon Cadets rifle line in 1974, the Nikischer’s simply volunteered for both organizations.

 

The Nikischer’s stepped away from the Corps during the mid-70’s, only to return in 1978, where Mr. Nikischer became Manager of the Plebes, including the winter Plebe’s Guard, until their son Joe took over the position of Manager in 1980.  At that point, Mrs. Nikischer returned as quartermistress and remained the secretary of the booster association and Mr. Nikischer remained a member of the booster association.  They both continued to work as volunteers for the Corps during the early 80’s.
